I feel I should give you an explanation: André had not provided a title for his novel. Years later, while editing the manuscript, it suddenly came to me -- almost as if he had whispered the name in my ear -- and I remembered that one of his favourite operas was Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle.

The opera tells the story of Bluebeard and the seven locked doors in his castle, which he opens at the urging of his new wife. Behind the doors are the failings of man: war, blood and tears, greed, lust, and so on. Behind the last and Seventh Door are the women from his past. This book is about today's Bluebeard, his all-too-human failings, and the memorable women from his past.
